The trend was clear: Corvette owners were making the transition from performance to luxury touring, as options like automatic transmissions and factory air conditioning became more and more popular. While these new SAE net horsepower ratings were somewhat deceptive, Corvette sales continued to climb, with a vast majority-21,350 of 27,004 buyers-choosing the standard 350/200 HP V-8. In addition to the base 350/200 HP small-block V-8, buyers could choose from the high-revving solid-lifter LT1 with a net SAE rating of 255 HP or the LS5 454 CI big-block rated at 270 HP at 4,000 RPM and 390 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 RPM. With the classic muscle-car era drawing to a close, Corvette buyers in 1972 had a choice of just three engines for the first time since the 1956 production year. This 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe is a phenomenal unrestored example that has twice been awarded NCRS Top Flight honors.
